Basic Search Operators

Keyword Matching & Boolean Operators

"" (Exact Match)

Encloses a phrase to search for the exact words in that order. Prevents synonyms.

Example: "red apple"

OR

Find pages containing either keyword. Must be in ALL CAPS. Use | as alternative.

Example: apples OR oranges or apples | oranges

AND

Google defaults to AND between words.

Example: apples AND oranges

- (Exclusion)

Excludes a specific word from the search results.

Example: apples -mac

* (Wildcard)

Acts as a wildcard, matching any word or phrase in its place.

Example: best * pie recipe

#..# (Number Range)

Searches for numbers within a range.

Example: camera $50..$100

Currency & Unit Conversion

$

Searches specifically for USD.

Example: laptop $500

Searches specifically for Euro.

Example: car €20000

in (Conversion)

Allows for unit conversions (currency, unit, or measure).

Example: 10 USD in EUR

Prefix Modifiers

~ (Synonyms)

Include synonyms of a word. (Potentially less effective now).

Example: ~healthy food

+ (Force Exact)

Forces an exact match on a single phrase (might not always work).

Example: +red apple

Advanced Search Operators

URL Specific Searches

inurl:

Returns results where the queried keyword is present in the URL.

Example: inurl:apple

allinurl:

Returns results containing all specified words in the URL.

Example: allinurl:red apple pie

site:

Limits results to those from a specific site.

Example: site:wikipedia.org apple

related:

Finds similar domains to the queried domain.

Example: related:apple.com

Date Range Searches

daterange:

Returns results in a specified date range (requires Julian dates).

Example: daterange:2458860-2458870 apple

after:

Returns results after a specified date.

Example: apple after:2023-01-01

before:

Returns results before a specified date.

Example: apple before:2023-01-01

Page Content Searches

link:

Finds pages that link to the target domain.

Example: link:apple.com

inanchor:

Finds pages linked to with the specified anchor text/phrase.

Example: inanchor:apple products

intitle:

Returns pages based on the searched query appearing in their title.

Example: intitle:apple pie recipe

intext:

Finds pages where the keyword(s) are mentioned within the page content.

Example: intext:apple benefits

File Specific Searches & Google Drive

File Type Searches

filetype:

Returns only files of a particular type associated with the keyword searched.

Example: apple filetype:pdf

ext:

Same as filetype:, based on extension.

Example: apple ext:pdf

Google Drive Search Operators

type:

Allows you to search Drive by file type.

Example: type:document apple

owner:

Allows you to search Drive by owner of file or folder.

Example: owner:[email protected] report

to:

Allows you to search Drive for files shared with a specific person.

Example: to:[email protected] proposal

title:

Searches Drive for files with the keyword in their title alone.

Example: title:budget budget

source:domain

Allows you to search for files or folders shared with everyone in your business.

Example: source:example.com policy

is:trashed

Searches for the item in the Drive bin.

Example: is:trashed invoice

Email & Miscellaneous Operators

Gmail Search Operators

from:

Specify the sender in Gmail.

Example: from:[email protected]

to:

Specify the recipient in Gmail.

Example: to:[email protected]

subject:

Search by keywords featured in the subject line.

Example: subject:Meeting Agenda

has:attachment

Search for messages that have an item attached.

Example: has:attachment report

is:read

Searches for read messages only.

Example: is:read project update

is:unread

Searches for unread messages.

Example: is:unread promotion

Miscellaneous Search Operators

define:

Pulls a card response from Google displaying the dictionary definition of the word or phrase.

Example: define:serendipity

cache:

Returns the most up-to-date cache of an indexed web page.

Example: cache:example.com

weather:

Brings up the featured snippet for weather for that location.

Example: weather:London

stocks:

Returns stock information for the specified ticker.

Example: stocks:AAPL

movie:

Find information for the specified movie (particularly useful when that movie has an ambiguous name). If the movie is still in theaters, it’ll also return screen times.
