Grammar Essentials

Word Order

Swedish generally follows Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) word order, similar to English.

Example:
Jag (Subject) äter (Verb) ett äpple (Object). - I eat an apple.

In questions, the word order often changes to Verb-Subject.

Example:
Äter (Verb) du (Subject) ett äpple? - Do you eat an apple?

Nouns and Articles

Swedish nouns have two genders: en (common) and ett (neuter).
Definite articles are attached as suffixes to the noun. For en words, the suffix is -en, and for ett words, it’s -et.

Examples:
En bok (a book) -> Boken (the book)
Ett hus (a house) -> Huset (the house)

For plural nouns, the definite article is often indicated with -na.

Example:
Böcker (books) -> Böckerna (the books)
